Easy Riders and Raging Bulls

New Hollywood was a great time for the directors and actors; it was the heyday of 'sex, drugs, rock and roll'. The baby boomers had taken over Hollywood, one of the first new Hollywood films was bonnie and Clyde. Roger Corman was responsible for developing the 'B movies' that allowed directors to make low budget films. Bert Schneider developed the idea of youth programmes such as the monkees, this moved onto the big screen in films such as easy rider which were aimed directly at a younger audience. Godfather was one of the first to be premiered nationwide on one day and made the most money on the first night, making 80 million. The new Hollywood directors were developing a society had built up at Malibu beach where a number of directors all lived, they advised each other and bounced ideas around. Cocaine became a problem it was used as a tool for inspiration but it lead to many unfortunate deaths. Jaws were the first 'blockbuster' movie it made 100 billion dollars. The introduction of blockbusters meant that gross became the important thing. Directors like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas rose to prominence and through their blockbusters the new age of Hollywood was killed, the last film that was truly new Hollywood was Raging bulls. Films that were part of new Hollywood include; bonnie and Clyde, easy rider, last movie, godfather, M*A*S*H, American graffiti, exorcist, jaws and raging bulls.

Robert Altman

Robert Bernard Altman (February 20, 1925 – November 20, 2006) was an American film director  Altman was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Altman was a soldier in world war 2 then joined the film industry in 1948.

several films he was involved in were; M*A*S*H, Popeye, The Player and Gosforth park.

Altman was known for making films that are highly naturalistic, but with a stylized perspective.

When he directed M*A*S*H he was 45.

Prior to M*A*S*H Altman had only directed short movies such as; The perfect crime and The magic Bond.

There was a lot of tension between the cast and Altman. During princial photography, Sutherland and Gould spent a third of their time trying to get Altman fired; Altman, relatively new to the filmmaking establishment, at that time lacked the credentials to justify his unorthodox filmmaking process and had a history of turning down work rather than creating a poor-quality product. Altman: "I had practice working for people who don't care about quality, and I learned how to sneak it in."Altman later commented that if he had known about Gould and Sutherland, he would have resigned.

M*A*S*H was produced by 20th century fox and had an estimated budget of  $3.5 million.

War Films

War films are a film genre concerned with warfare, usually about naval, air or land battles, sometimes focusing instead on prisoners of war, covert operations, military training or other related subjects. At times war films focus on daily military or civilian life in wartime without depicting battles. Their stories may be fiction, based on history, docudrama, biographical, or even alternate history fiction.


the war film has come a long way from beginnings in 1915 with birth of a nation. to the new modern films such as black hawk down and the hurt locker.

Narrative theory- Todorov

This theory states how narratives follow a sequence of events
This can be split into three key acts equilibrium, disruption new equilibrium.

An example of a film which follows this is MR Beans holiday (Steve Bandelack-2007). at first he is going on a nice free holiday (Equilibrium) then he accidentally seperates a young boy from his father (Disruption) they journey to find his dad and after many mishaps they eventually do and Bean can enjoy his holiday (New Equilbrium).

an example of a film that doesn't follow this is Big Fish (Tim Burton-2003)

this film starts in equilibrium introducing the main characters son will, we then go to disruption as the main character edward falls ill, will goes to see his father with wife josephine and whilst they are there edward tells josephine several stories which each have equilibrium, then a disruption then a new equilibrium. so the structure is equilibrium, disruption, equilibrium, disruption ,new equilbirum, disruption, equilibrium, disruption, new equilibrium then the new equilibrium in the main story when edward dies.

wheres wally synopsis

WHERE’S WALLY THE MOTION PICTURE
comedy, spoof, action/thriller

A world wide disaster strikes, this disaster is a satanic ritual made by the pope but no one knows, and only one man can help Wally. M15 agent Tim bejebus and buddy Lance Briggs goes to get him. But he is nowhere to be found this starts a worldwide and time travelling search for Wally. Firstly they go to Paris to look for him prompting a car chase with odlaw. Meets with wenda in Rome to look for him finds a secret plot lead by the church to kidnap Wally thus stopping Wally saving the world. They find Wally’s backpack at the coliseum this leads them to wizard whitebeard who allows Tim to time travel he tells them that the church have gone back in time taking wally to find artefacts they require . Lance stays behind to look into the disaster. They travel to ancient Egypt and are lead into prison by odlaw (who has come back in time due to the popes jazzy powers) disguised as a pharaoh they are about to be killed when woof saves them. They escape Egypt to New York in the 1920’s were they look for Wally around New York leading to a montage. Tim goes to Lance who has found out the popes evil plan, at this point, a ninja cardinal bursts in and shoots lance before running away, this leads to lance saying ‘damn I was only 3 days away from retirement’. Funeral in the rain, Tim vows vengeance. Tim goes to the MI5 labs to get a secret weapon to help him when there Walter reveals a crate he opens the crate to reveal Chuck Norris. They eventually head back to modern day Rome to see the pope taking Wally into some jazzy portal. Tim tries to stop but is pushed away leading to an awesome fight scene between ninja cardinals and Tim with the help of chuck Norris. The film ends with Wally being saved after chuck Norris kills the pope and Wally is saved he then subsequently saves the world.

Cinematography

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Cinematography is the use of lighting and camera choices to create a given effect in films.

Shot size is the use of different sizes of shot to emphasise different ideas. Extreme Long Shots are used as establishing shots they are used to set the scene and show large sections of action. Medium Shots are used to show characters in resonable detail they also allow for hand movements to be seen and are commonly used to show two characters. Extreme Close Ups are used to show very small sections of a character usually the face to show emotions and reactions.

Camera angle is how the camera views the subject. A low angle shot use the camera below the subject angled up. This connotes power and also makes the subject appear taller.

High angle shots are used to give of feelings of weakness and makes us give pity to the character shown. The camera is positioneed above the subject looking down.

Movement is how the camera moves to show the subject. peddig and panning are similar as the camera stays static, but in panning the camera moves to the left and right of the subject, where as in pedding the camera moves up and down. tracking is where the camera stays still but it is moved on a trolley towards or away from the subject, in contrast crabbing involves moving on atrolley to the right or left of the subject.

Composition

The rule of thirds The rule of thirds is a compositional rule of thumb in visual arts such as painting, photography and design. The rule states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.

Positioning is how the shot is taken and from what view. subjective positioning is from the subjects point of view allowing us to see what they see. Objective positioning is a view of the subject and the surrounding area.

An example of subjective positioning from let the right one in is when jocke is being eaten and his friend sees him from his window. This shot lets us see the action whilst suggesting he is powerless and cant help jocke.
